Interior Design & Architecture

Steam is water that becomes air and light rises from the surface, heavy as metal and smooth as a mirror, of the placid lake. Steam has a slow but steady motion. It flows like the water that generated it. Sometimes, cut by the wind, it gives birth to subtle and sophisticated embroideries, similar to the striations of white stone. Marble. Smooth when treated, irregular and rough where chipped or fractured. Or not fractured but rather gently polished by water, the same water from which steam originates.

The magic of the lake permeating the atmosphere of an enchanting place inspired the concept for the design of this refined villa in the hills of Stresa.

Project Details.

The interior of the villa is a combination of two eras interacting through forms and styles. The original building was enlarged with the addition of the terrace and living room volume but kept the staircase structure and window format intact. And it is the staircase, crossing each floor, that is the element that dictates the new style of the villa: the completely changed finishes make the new interior more open and interconnected with its individual parts.

The choice of color palette and textures is suggested and inspired by the strong connection between the property and the surrounding landscape dominated by the placidity of the lake and the majesty of the mountains. A refined and eclectic ensemble of textures, warm and cool materials, muted tones and elements in vivid colors, raised surfaces alternating with smooth ones, the strength and constancy of hard materials counterbalanced by the presence of soft furnishings and draperies, all employed in a calibrated manner to create correspondence between the interior and the natural elements surrounding the dwelling.

The ground floor composed of the scenic entrance hall, panoramic living room, kitchen and dining room is the floor from which the style of the villa originates and develops. It is precisely from the living room dominated by large panoramic windows that the original motif of the mountain relief seems to penetrate through the ceiling, expands on the dining room wall and then continues at the entrance and staircase.

The second floor houses the private spaces since it is the floor dedicated to the bedrooms. The style of the villa is further enhanced by the elegance of the aesthetic and compositional solutions designed for each room and its bathrooms. In the master bedroom, the elegant effect of black marble with white streaks covering the walls is enhanced by the contrast with the white plaster panel with solid curtains and a soft trend placed on the wall opposite the bed.

The second floor, attic floor, less rigidly supports the stylistic tone of the other floors by indulging in “lighter” and more playful solutions that nevertheless give each room a distinct personality even through the minimal furnishings. It houses the children’s rooms and a more “adult” and elegant guest room, in which the minimalist style of the attic floor is here complemented by the sophistication of the rooms on the second floor.
