Square footage doesn’t always matter. That is, there are small spaces that, if well thought out, can appear large. In these cases, it is by intervening on the floor plan or selecting the right finishes and furnishings that we can transform bounded spaces into airy, spacious rooms. Such was the case with the design of this 60-square-meter apartment in Milan. The original floor plan consisted of a long, dark hallway, 2 small rooms, a tiny kitchen, and a small bathroom. The aim was to get as much air as possible while making sure that certain areas of the apartment could at the same time enjoy the necessary privacy. The result is an environment in which the minimalist, essential and clean Nordic style finds its exaltation. For a sense of peace, tranquility, completeness. And of breath, air, space.

Project Details.

Masses have been kept to a minimum: the only real wall is the bathroom wall while the only solid block is the volume that serves as a fireplace. The bedroom has been separated from the living room by a glass partition that can be closed by a covering curtain. The lights are linear, the clutter of the furniture minimized: it is their shape that fills and modulates. Homogeneous finishes. A single color, light taupe, at covering the walls throughout the apartment allows the wooden elements or the black lines of the profiles to reveal themselves in the essential purity of their forms. Glass, versatile and multifaceted, an element capable of separating without setting limits or barriers, has been used here to sublimate volumes and together with the curtain and the other important theme of the line creates in the living room surprising scenic effects. The long wall of the living room is entirely occupied by the bookcase, in natural walnut, coordinated with the kitchen and the front door. Storage units and shelves create depth. They convey materiality and that balanced contrast that warms.
The sense of openness and airiness is completed by the presence of the windows, an opening and contact with the outside world, which here become places of action, operational: in the niche of the window has been inserted the kitchen sink . The peninsula, placed between the wall of the kitchen area and the living room, lends itself to multiple functions: it is not only a dining table but also a work table or support table. It also contributes to keeping always alive the theme of communication and fluidity, of spaces as well as of the elements in them. It is a way to create interaction, new habits, new lifestyles, to feel ourselves present and in communication with them.
